Matterhorn Ultraks 2025: Trail running spectacle with top international line-up
Nestled in the heart of the Valais Alps, the Matterhorn Ultraks offers a breathtaking setting: majestic peaks, challenging trails, and a unique atmosphere. With a variety of race distances, there’s something for every level – from short entry-level runs to technically demanding and longer races.
EXTREME – The flagship of Matterhorn Ultraks
The event weekend kicks off with the EXTREME on Friday, 22 August at 8:00 a.m., starting straight away with a sporting highlight. Part of the prestigious Merrell Skyrunner® World Series, the race brings the international skyrunning elite to Zermatt.
In the spotlight: Local hero and last year’s winner Martin Anthamatten (adidas Terrex). He faces strong competition, including big names such as Manuel Merillas (New Balance), Frédéric Tranchand (Merrell), and Gianluca Ghiano (Brooks), who made the podium in 2024.
In the women’s race, defending champion Anastasia Rubtsova is the favorite, having won the EXTREME for the past two years. She’ll be challenged by Naiara Irigoyen (Open Team), currently ranked second in the Merrell Skyrunner® World Series, and Lucille Germain (Nnormal), currently third, both arriving in top form.

There are still spots available in the following categories:
- ACTIVE: 19 km and 1,150 m of elevation gain – ideal for those who want to combine challenge with enjoyment.
- SKY: 49 km and 3,600 m of elevation gain, featuring technical sections and breathtaking views – for ambitious mountain runners.
- VERTINIGHT: A spectacular night race from Zermatt to Sunnegga over 4.9 km and 691 m of elevation gain. New in 2025: spectators and accompanying persons can ride the train to the Sunnegga finish line free of charge.
- Kids’ races: A highlight for the next generation of trail runners, with two course lengths depending on age.

Event Hub: The Ultraks Plaza
The Ultraks Plaza on Obere Matten in Zermatt is the vibrant heart of the event. This is where the start and finish areas are located (except for the VERTINIGHT finish). Spectators can experience the full trail running atmosphere up close: Food, drinks, entertainment, sponsor booths, and emotional finishes create an unforgettable vibe.
